Neuro Anatomy Short Course

22 AUG 2020

TBC

TYGERBERG CAMPUS

Anatomy workshop 4 -Neuroanatomy

This workshop is for all therapists that work with the human body.

The workshop is aimed at better understanding the adult brain through investigation of the positioning and function of the most important elements of the brain. Students will get the opportunity to study the osteology of the skull and the vertebra column.

Gain information for understanding the topography of the cerebrum and the importance thereof in that it contains areas of sensation, movement, hearing, vision, speech, memory etc. If an area of the cerebrum has a lesion (as a result of trauma, stroke, tumor, abscess) specific functions are affected or abolished. Other aberrations include epilepsy, Alzheimers disease and depression.

Study the cerebellum and its most well known functions of coordination of movement (in a smooth and well coordinated way). Look at lesions that result in retardation due to uncontrolled movement and an inability to learn new movement and cerebellar neurological fallouts due to tumors.

Look at the brainstem where automatic responses (primary reflexes) occur. The brainstem forms the link between the spinal cord with the cerebrum and cerebellum. Students will look at the neuronal networking involving the reticular formation. Subtle lesions in this area exist in relationship with depression and schizophrenia while gross lesions (stroke / thrombosis) in any area of the brainstem may result in death.

As a final part of the workshop students will look at the classification and identification of the routes of distinct cranial nerves.

Therapists are often faced with dysfunction in clients as a result of brain injuries, strokes or brain disease. By applying the knowledge from this workshop they can better understand function and dysfunction in the body as a result of the injury or insult in the brain area. They can then customise and adapt their therapeutic approach to best help the client.

Prerequisite

Attendance of the first workshop, The Inside Story, or having completed other Anatomy courses. Please contact us if you would like to know whether your prior Anatomy course will enable you to attend this workshop without having to attend the first workshop.
